ABOUT

A contemporary approach that combines organic elements and geometric references, exploring a refined language, with games of volumes and fittings that make the pieces homogeneous and coherent.

I am moved by the inspiration that surrounds me every day, particularly that which comes from my two grandmothers. Yes, my two grandmothers influenced my life, even if it wasn't immediately or even consciously. My maternal grandmother was an antiques dealer, making the coming and going of antique furniture, paintings and unique jewelry essential to my creative process. My paternal grandmother, on the other hand, is someone who lived — and still lives — far ahead of her time, often taking me to art and jewelry exhibitions.

After graduating in Environmental Design Production at IADE – Institute of Visual Arts, Design and Marketing in June 2006, I joined the Jewelery course at Ar.Co – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual , lasting four years — three years of regular course + one year of individual project.

Between September 2010 and March 2011, I took a step forward and moved to Barcelona to intern at the studios of Marc Monzó and Estela Guitart . I returned to Portugal with a heart full of hope and learned a lot, but I wanted more, so I started working as a workshop assistant for designer and jeweler Valentim Quaresma until July 2012. Before that, however, I was already sure of the path I wanted to follow. . Joana Mota Capitão Jewelery was born in May 2012, at which point I placed all my trust in this jewelry brand that I wanted to see flourish with my own style and concept.

There is always a differentiating concept behind each piece, a story. My travels, nature, art, my childhood and my surroundings are where I draw inspiration. This isn't always easy — sometimes it's difficult for me to give it the use it deserves — but I always try to keep an eye on what's going on around me, such as exhibitions, books and magazines. But inspiration takes work and there is an urgent need to keep the curiosity flowing.
